A corporator of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, in fact the deputy chairman of the civic body’s revenue committee, has been made to wait for six months for a house meant for the economically weaker sections (EWS) of society.

Raman Patni, the BJP corporator from the Asarva ward, had applied for allotment of a house in lieu of his hutment that had been demolished to make space for a pay-and-use toilet block.

Though the standing committee of the AMC passed a resolution to the effect of allotting houses to economically weaker sections of society around three years back, the administration has not yet acted his request, Patni said.

Patni had served at Amruta Textile Mills for 20 years before losing his job. “Before being elected a corporator, I worked as a rickshaw driver and vegetable vendor,” he said. Patni’s wife still works as a vegetable vendor.

As his home could not accommodate the families of his sons and daughter, he had taken a house in the same neighbourhood on rent for the eldest son. Moreover, his current house is under threat of removal because of work on widening the road. “There is a proposal for road widening, which requires the removal of around 15 houses. As the civic body has not provided any alternate arrangements, we have opposed the proposal,” Patni said.

As Patni sought a house after his hutment was removed, the municipal commissioner promised him that he would receive one within a week. However, nothing in this regard has been done, Patni said. He also accused a deputy municipal of corruption, which, he said, could be a reason for the delay in allotment.

Patni had earlier also provided data to the administration regarding EWS quarters ready for possession and had represented his case before the municipal commissioner, deputy municipal commissioner, mayor, leader of the part, chairman of the standing committee and other civic body members.

When the Congress was in power in the AMC, EWS quarters had been allotted to corporators, and on this basis, Patni’s proposal had been passed by the standing committee of the AMC, said Dr Kamlesh Patel, leader of the BJP in the AMC. “I do not know what has caused this delay,” he said referring to the allotment of EWS quarters for Patni.
