In order to ensure that the city become aware of cancer on the eve of 'World Cancer Day', Science City organised a day-long programme on the theme 'Cancer can be prevented too', that began at 12.00pm and went on till 6.00pm, on Thursday.

About 450 children including teachers from district schools participated in this programme that focused on the reasons for contracting the disease and how it can be prevented. They had an interactive session on cancer, its possible causes and its treatments along with a look at the presentations and posters prepared by the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute (GCRI).

In addition, the programme also laid emphasis on simple techniques such as saying no to tobacco use, following a healthy diet and regularly exercising, and also limited intake of alcohol that could be a preventive measure against cancer-causing infections.

Based on the presentations and slide shows, these children from schools such as Ishwarpura Prathmik Shala, Navchetan Vidyalaya, Surat, Smt. ST Mehta English Medium School, Ghatkopar(w), Mumbai, Shrimali SG Mehta English Medium School, English School, Bhavnagar, LT High School, Anand and Rajpara Prathmik Shala sought information on the 'Four P's of Prevention' — plant based diets; prevention of obesity associated with cancer; physically activity, associated with reduced risk of cancer; and practical thinking. In addition, they also got a chance to get rid of myths about cancer and its treatment processes.

“This knowledge of cancer will help them understand the disease better, its occurrence and how one can make informed choices on cancer care," said Dr Narottan Sahoo of the Gujarat Council of Science City, GCSC.
