All the 23 people nabbed by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) at the liquor party on Sunday secured bail - police had sought remand for Harsh Shah, the organiser of the party, but the metropolitan judge rejected their demand and released him on conditional bail.

The police wanted the remand to know about the bootlegger who supplied the high quality booze that was consumed at the party.

Police investigations have also revealed that Shah co-ordinates the activities of a social group and is a regular partygoer. He organises liquor parties in the city, farmhouses and in hotels.

Talking to DNA, sources familiar with the development said that all the persons nabbed have been booked under the prohibition activities law.

Shah has to mark his presence at the DCB for the next three days.

“We are in the process of getting the name of the bootlegger who supplied the booze to Shah,” a cop said.

Sources familiar with the partygoers said that there was a mixed crowd at the party. “People from the business field, media, judiciary and politics were present at the high profile party,” the source said. However, officials of the detection of crime branch refused to say anything about the development. “We have produced all the accused except Shah in the court and they have secured bail,” MA Chavda, assistant commissioner of police, DCB, told DNA.

Police investigations have revealed that five people out of the total arrested have a permit to drink.

“However, they cannot use it to defend themselves, as the permit is for drinking alone and not to organise a party,” the source said.

City sociologist Gaurang Jani says, “The elite class of Gujarati society is signaling a shift in the change in the ideology and culture which implies that contemporary Gujarati society is not comfortable with the existing values.”
