9 killed, 1 injured in mishap near Surat

Two NRI families from Vadodara dist were travelling to Surat in a Tata Sumo; one family perishes in tragedy .

In a tragic accident, nine persons were killed while one was seriously injured in a collision between a Tata Sumo and a dumper truck at Dhamrod village near Kosamba on Monday morning. The driver of Tata Sumo lost control of the vehicle and jumped over the road divider when a dumper hit from the rear. The injured person has been admitted to a hospital.

Jagdish Patel, 54, a resident of South Carolina in the USA, had come to his native place at Sanghi village in Padra taluka of Vadodara district to attend a marriage ceremony. Jagdish's family was accompanied by his distant relative Pinakin Patel, also a resident of South Carolina. After the marriage ceremony got over, Jagdish and Pinakin decided to meet one of their relatives in Surat and hired a Tata Sumo (GJ-7-H-4634) for the trip.

Nine persons from both families set off for Surat in the vehicle on Monday morning. Around 11:00 am, when they were passing from Dhamrod village near Kosamba, the driver lost control.

Owing to high speed, the car jumped off the road divider and landed on the opposite lane. The driver was trying to reverse the vehicle, and in the meantime, a speeding dumper truck rammed into the car from behind.

Nine persons, including the car driver, died on the spot. Locals rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. They evacuated the bodies by cutting open the car.

The deceased have been identified as Jadgish Patel, 54; Bhavini Patel, 21; Payal Patel, 23; Jayesh Patel, 45; Pinakin Patel, 54; Kalpana Patel, 50; Hetali Patel, 22; Arpit Patel, 20 (all residents of South Carolina) and Sumo driver Jayesh Patel, 35, a resident of Sanghi village.

A woman passenger, Indira Patel, wife of Jagdish Patel, who sustained injuries, has been admitted to a private hospital in Ankleshwar. Her condition is still said to be critical. The accident claimed the entire family of Pinakin Patel.

The post mortem of all the nine persons was carried out at Kosamba. Relatives of both the families rushed to Kosamba and took custody of the bodies before returning to Sanghi late on Monday.

Kosamba police registered a case and were investigating the matter.
