The national capital has witnessed over 800 crimes committed by motorcycle-borne men this year, with snatching topping the list at 760 cases, even as the police claim that there is "no spurt" in such incidents.

Till November 15 this year, a total of 831 cases of murder, robbery and snatching committed by motorcycle-borne assailants were reported from across the city and police arrested 857 people in connection with these incidents.

According to Delhi police statistics, three murders were committed by bikers in the city, while the number of robberies was 68. Police arrested 12 people in connection with the murder cases while in the robbery cases, 115 were caught.

"Compared to last year, this year's figure is less," a senior police official said. Last year, a total of 850 snatchings, 81 robberies and four murders were committed by motorcycle-borne assailants.

This year's figures are higher as compared to those of 2006 and 2007.

In 2006, a total of 807 cases were reported while the figure for 2007 was 791.

A total of 733 snatchings and 74 robberies were reported in 2006, the figures for 2007 was 727 snatchings, 62 robberies and two murders.

"This year, the figure has already surpassed the figures of 2006 and 2007. However, the number is less compared to last year so far," the official said.

According to the statistics, all the three murder cases involving motorcyclists are pending trial.

Of the 115 arrested in robbery cases, six persons have already been convicted while cases against 43 are pending in court. Investigations are yet to be concluded in cases involving 63 persons.

In snatching cases, ten people have been convicted and two acquitted out of the 730 arrested.

According to the official, city police have caught over 250 people with criminal background since this February during a special drive to verify the ownership of motorcycles after noticing a spurt in crimes being carried out by persons using motorcycles.

"We verified the ownership of 3,74,159 motorcycles and caught over 250 people either with criminal background or criminal cases pending against them," the official said.

After the launch of the drive, the official said there has been a downward trend in motorcycles used in robberies and snatching.

"There has been a decrease of around 30% in motorcycle-borne robberies while there has been a decrease of around 20% in snatching," he said.
