A speeding truck rammed into a Maruti van near Sandhiyer village in Olpad taluka of Surat district on Tuesday morning killing eight people and seriously injuring five others.
A speeding truck rammed into a Maruti van near Sandhiyer village in Olpad taluka of Surat district on Tuesday morning killing eight people and seriously injuring five others. The truck driver fled from the spot soon after the incident. Olpad police have registered a case in this regard and have launched a manhunt for the driver.
Naresh Patel, 27, a resident of Navapara area of Sayan village, who used to ferry passengers from Sayan to Olpad on his Maruti van (GJ-5-N-9728) was also killed in the incident.
Patel was ferrying 13 passengers from Sayan village on Tuesday morning when the vehicle was hit by a truck carrying sand. The incident happened while the van was passing from Sandhiyer to Atodara village in Olpad. The powerful collision twice overturned the van, throwing it into a nearby rivulet.
So severe was the impact that the passengers were thrown out of the vehicle. Six passengers died on the spot while seven others, sustained severe injuries. Local villagers rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. The injured were admitted to a nearby government hospital, where two of them later succumbed during treatment. Five of the injured were later shifted to new civil hospital in Surat among which the condition of four is said to be critical.
The deceased have been identified as Sohrabibi Pathan, 45, a resident of Ankleshwar, Damyanti Patel, 52, Priyankkumar Sayania, 25, Sita Patel, 65, Naresh Patel, 27, Prabhu Patel, 64, Abdul Ansari, 57, all residents of Sayan and Malvika Khalasi, 45, a Bharuch resident. Police said that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to negotiate a sharp turn and hit the van.
