6 killed as Laila batters parts of Tamil Nadu

Six people were killed and scores of fishermen went missing as unseasonal cyclone Laila caused heavy rain in coastal regions of Tamil Nadu.

Rain disrupted normal life in Chennai too. The city had to suffer from power cuts.

According to met department sources, heavy rain was likely to continue for the next 48 hours in north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh.

“The centre of the cyclonic storm lies 160 km east-northeast of Chennai. There will be heavy rain in some parts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh,” met department sources said.

Rain caused havoc in Rameswaram, damaging over 250 boats, including mechanised fishing trawlers, country-boats fitted with outboard engines and patrol boats of the Indian Coast Guard and the Tamil Nadu Marine Police.

Thozhudur in Cuddalore district received maximum rainfall of 9 cm in 24 hours while Chennai reported 8 cm. Thiruvallur, Nagapattinam and Kancheepuram districts also received heavy rain.

While a five-year-old girl was electrocuted at Pattukottai when she came into contact with a livewire, two deaths were reported from Karur and one from Dindugul district on Tuesday.

Fisherman Muthulingam, 52, of Tirupalakudi in Ramanathapuram district, drowned in high seas as he tried to retrieve his boat that was washed away. A 24-year-old woman software employee — Tejavathi of Andhra Pradesh — was electrocuted in Velacherry on Wednesday morning. She was walking on a road and had stepped into a puddle in which a high tension wire was submerged.

Chennaites were caught unawares by the cyclone. But residents of the TN capital can expect respite as the intensity of the cyclone is likely to diminish in the next 24 hours, according to met department sources.
