Fifty-one Indian expats, including 17 from Pimpri-Chinchwad area, were recently rescued from the clutches of a Malaysian contractor with efforts of Shiv Sena MP from Maval, Gajanan Babar.

The contractor maltreated and forced them to live in inhuman conditions in Kuala Lumpur. He allegedly seized their passports after they arrived in Kuala Lumpur in July last year. These Indians were made to work more and were given less than promised salaries. Moreover, they were given jobs, which were not matching their qualifications.

When Babar was apprised of their ordeal by some Pimpri-Chinchwad youths stuck there, he took up the matter with the Union ministry of external affairs.

Babar told DNA that the aggrieved expats tried many ways to get away from that country but did not succeed. “Thereafter, they contacted me. I got in touch with the Union ministry of external affairs and the Indian High Commission in Malaysia. All the 51 Indians were repatriated to Chennai by an Air Asia flight on March 14,” the MP said.

The 17 youths met Babar on Sunday and thanked him for his intervention, due to which they could come back to India.
One of the victims, Sachin Jadhav, said, “We left on July 26 last year for Malaysia. When we reached there, none of us got managerial jobs. We were forced to work at restaurants as waiters, cashiers and cleaners. The contractor did not give us any place to stay. We resided in Batu Caves Temple Complex. We were paid just to buy our food.”

Another victim, Chaitanya Khamkar, said they tried contacting ministers but in vain. “Somehow, we got Babar’s telephone number. We narrated him our problem on February 28. Due to his efforts, we left Malaysia on March 14,” he said.

The Indian high commission has promised the 51 Indians that it would ensure that the contractor settles their salaries promised to them. Their airfare from Malaysia to India was taken care by Air Asia airlines.
