5000 kids faced sex assaults last year

The latest National Crime Records bureau data about crimes committed against children paints a gloomy picture. 5,484 children were sexually assaulted, 1,408 were killed.

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have earned the dubious distinction of two most crime prone states, accounting for over 7,800 lives lost in violent crimes in 2010. A total of 33,908 people across India were killed in violent crimes and a substantial number — 15,787 — of them were youth belonging to the age group of 18 to 30 years.

The number of casualties in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar stood at 4,456 and 3,362 respectively. Maharashtra was third in the list with 2,837 followed by Andhra Pradesh (2,538) and Madhya Pradesh (2,441), the annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau says.

In the national capital, 577 people, including 119 women, were killed in violent crimes.

The age group of 18 to 30 years were the worst victims of violent crimes last year with 15,787 young people, including 4,207 females, losing their lives across the country.

A total of 13,134 people, including 3,057 women, belonging to the age group of 30-50 years were killed in violent crimes last year, while 3,339 others belonging to the age group of 50 or above lost their lives in such crimes.

Altogether, 727 children, including 343 girls, in the age of upto 10 years were also killed in violent crimes
