The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad announced its prestigious Shri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Awards and PRL Award for 2011. Five scientists working with different research institutions of India have been chosen for the award based on their outstanding contribution and original work.

These scientists have been chosen for their research work in the fields of Space Sciences, Space Applications, Electronics, Informatics, Telematics and Automation and Systems Analysis or Management, including non-linear, non-equilibrium systems in natural and social sciences and technology.

Prof Tarun Souradeep from Inter University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics, Pune and Dr Biswajit Paul from Raman Research Institute, Bangalore will be sharing the award in area of Space Science. Dr NR Patel from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun has been chosen for his work in Space Application.

Dr Ashwin Gumaste from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, is selected for his work in Electronics, Informatics, Telematics & Automation area. Dr Vineet K Gahalaut from National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad will also be feted with the PRL Award.

Talking about the history of the award, Mrinalini Sarabhai said that principal of school in Gandhi Ashram, Pratap Upadhyay, who was not only a teacher for Mallika and Kartikeya Sarabhai, but also like a family member to the Sarabhai family, was influenced by spiritual thoughts of Pujya Mota. Mrinalini Sarabhai too was Pujya Mota’s follower and visited the Ashram in Nadiad.

After Dr Vikram Sarabhai passed away, Pujya Mota told Upadhyay to do something in his memory. Thus Hari Om Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Research Awards were instituted. The funding for the awards comes from the Hari Om Ashram and PRL scrutinises the applications for the awards.

The PRL Award was instituted from the Aruna Lal Endowment Fund established by Prof Devendra Lal, honorary fellow and former director of PRL. The awards, given every alternate year, consists of cash prize of Rs50,000 and a medal. It is given to outstanding Indian scientists, below 45 years of age as on January 1 of the award year. All awardees deliver a lecture on the day of the award highlighting their scientific contributions.

Know who they are

Name: Prof Tarun Souradeep
Institute: Inter University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics, Pune
Brief: Born near Kolkata, the scientist is a well established cosmologist working in the area of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy and polarization. He has been chosen for the award for his significant contribution in the field of observational cosmology by developing new analytical approach for studying anisotropy in cosmic microwave background data obtained by Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe and recent Planck mission.
