The Bapunagar by-polls on Sunday went peacefully, with no untoward incident reported. Residents thronged schools in large number to vote. Around 42% of the total 58,000 voters turned out to vote.

The by-polls had to be conducted due to resignation of one of the Bapunagar corporators Kalpesh Chavda, who quit in January 2012.

There was tight security arrangement at all venues and around 20-25 security personnel were deployed in every school where voting took place. A total of 300 security personnel were present at 12 schools.

Bapunagar ward corporator Ashwin Pethani said that the by-election went peacefully and no incidents of crime were reported.

Seven candidates are vying for the seat of corporator from Bapunagar. Interestingly, of these, one candidate each belongs to Bhartiya Janta Party and Congress, while the rest five are independent candidates.

Elaborating on the poll process, Pethani said, "There were 65 voting booths. Every school had around 8-12 booths. For smooth operations, 195 election officials were present at the venues." The result of the by-election will be out on Tuesday at 9 am.

The seven candidates in fray are Mukesh Parmar of BJP, Jayantibhai Chavda of Congress and Dipak Parmar of Nationalist Congress Party. The rest -Buddhisagar Rathore, Narayan Sengal, Pravin Sengal and G Purabia- are independent candidates.

If sources are to be believed, chances of BJP winning are quite high. "The two corporators of the ward belong to BJP. Kalpesh Chavda, who resigned in January, too was from BJP. We can say that BJP is likely to win this time," added a source close to the development.

BJP candidate Mukesh Parmar expressed confidence of their victory in the by-election. "I'm sure people will support BJP and will vote for me. We have worked hard. We visited each household to campaign. I'm sure the result will be in my favour on Tuesday," he said.
