The performance by the special human trafficking cells set up by state CID has not gone unnoticed. Impressed by the work of these cells, the Centre decided to double the grant of last year's Rs37 lakh for the department. Following this, the department has decided to set up four more such cells.

To strike down on human trafficking, the Supreme Court of India had issued guidelines to the central government, based on which, the Home ministry calls in nodal officers from each state every other month to enquire about their progress of the same. At the latest such meet in December 2011, it was announced that Gujarat's CID had successfully traced 245 missing women and children through their special cells.

The state's nodal officer for human trafficking, CID (Crime) DIG AK Jadeja told DNA, "Last year, we kick-started a drive against human trafficking, where we had ordered for a special cell to be set up in five of the woman police stations of the state - Ahmedabad city, Ahmedabad rural, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot. We had also allocated special staff to operate these cells independently as well as provided specialised equipment including jeeps, still and video cameras, computers and mobile phones."

There were standing orders issued to each of these special cells to formulate comprehensive lists of all cases of women and children missing from their respective jurisdictions, Jadeja said.

"We then sent special investigative teams to the residences of these missing women and children. We even managed to trace 245 of them and send them home in the past year," he said.

"Impressed by this performance, the Centre decided to double the department's grant. Hence, we will now set up four more special cells in other regions of the state. We will conduct a survey to ascertain which areas have the maximum cases of missing women and children. Based on this survey, we will decide where to set up the new cells," Jadeja said.
