A four-day training session, organized by CID (crime) office, Gandhinagar to make police officials sensitive about their conduct while handling cases of missing children commenced on Tuesday.

Speaking on the issue, Sukhdev Patel, founder of Gantar, an NGO that works for children, said, "Help a helpless kid unite with his family. Do this, not because you are duty bound, but because one day you will want to tell a story to your kids and gain their appreciation."

The event is being held at the CID office at Police Bhavan, Gandhinagar. The police, who most often end up adding to the problems of the grieving parents of the missing kids, are being educated on the delicate matter. "On the first day of the session, almost 90% of police officials felt the dire need to find the missing kids," Patel told DNA.

Four cops from each district are  taking part in the training session. "The aim is to sensitise cops towards issue of missing kids and I felt that this step may make some difference," said DIG AK Jadeja CID (crime) and Railways.

Patel has tried to raise the issue of having 'concern' for a kid who doesn't have a shelter. "Patrolling is a part of policing and when the cops are looking for criminals they can always remain extra vigilant when they see a a kid moving about without any shelter," said Patel. One DSP, PI, a constable and one computer operator from each district attended the programme. "Those who attended will have to work on the cases of missing kids and keep updating the CID about the cases in their districts," said Jadeja. The computer operator will be trained to update details of missing kids on the website for easy access.

"This website will be made available to the missing cell of CBI,” he said.
