It’s not just fake cops who rob citizens but also real ones who steal from innocent people. In a shocking revelation late on Thursday night, four policemen were arrested for extorting money from a call centre owner in Navrangpura, by posing as cyber experts from the crime branch.

The policemen, posted at Navrangpura police station, allegedly demanded Rs50,000 from the call centre owner who had recently ventured into the business. Police said that the owner, identified as Praful and a resident of Isanpur, had lodged a complaint with the Navrangpura police station earlier this month.

According to deputy commissioner of police, zone one, Sandeep Singh, the policemen approached Praful saying they were cyber experts from the city police’s detection of crime branch (DCB).

They reportedly put a scare in Praful by claiming that the business he was running was illegal, and to ‘settle the matter”, the accused cops along with an unidentified person asked for Rs50,000 from the complainant.

Police said that Praful agreed to pay the money, but instead lodged an FIR with the Navrangpura police. Following this, the cops arrested the accused, who have been booked under IPC section-384 which deals with extortion.

The accused cops have been identified as Viral Modi, Vinay Desai, Pankesh Janabhai and Kanhaiyalal. These cops are constables and had been posted at Navrangpura and Naranpura police stations.

Despite several attempts by DNA, the investigative officer PM Sarvaiya, police inspector with Navrangpura, didn’t respond to calls.
