Nashik Police have booked 31 people under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for the murder of policeman Krishnakant Bidve. Eight people had been arrested in the case immediately after the murder, and a total of 14 have been arrested so far. Among them are Pawan Pawar, Santosh Kushare, Surendra Sare, Ravindra Samwatsarkar, Sachin Patil, Shridhar alias Bhawadya Samwatsarkar, Rohit Jathar, Sachin Dange, Deepak Kidve, Sandeep Patil, Muddasar Sheikh, Tushar Rakshe, Kishore Baru and Vickey Patil. They have been are remanded in police custody till June 20, 2009.

Krishnakant Bidve and his partner Ramdas Shinde were on beat marshal duty on the night of May 31. The two cops were on their official two-wheeler when they confronted a group of men near Swami Samrath Kendra in the city’s Jail Road area.
In the ensuing altercation, the men started abusing the policemen and began stoning them. The mob also attacked them with swords.

Shinde escaped narrowly and informed the control room. However, the attackers snatched Bidve’s service pistol and his mobile phone, and managed to escape after injuring him in the stomach with a sword. Bidve succumbed to his injuries on June 2.
Protests followed, in which 40 vehicles were torched in the New Nashik area. As the violence escalated, the incidents were also seen as a move to put pressure on the government to transfer police commissioner VD Mishra.

Mishra had initiated measures to control illegal and criminal activities in the city, which had resulted in a nexus between mafia gangs, groups, politicians, and even corrupt policemen.
