Around 30 people were injured when the engine and three bogeys of an intra-district train derailed near Sadura at Qazigund in Anantnag district of South Kashmir on Wednesday.

This is the first train accident since the railways started operations in Kashmir in October 2008 when prime minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the first phase of the Mazhom-Anantang railway line.

The train was on its way from Qazigund to Srinagar when it derailed near Sadura at 12.10 pm.

“Around 30 people were injured of which seven were given first aid and discharged from the station. Twenty injured passengers were admitted to the trauma hospital at Qazigund where their condition is stated to be out of danger. Three were shifted to Anantnag district hospital,” Kifayat Hussain Rizvi, deputy commissioner Anantnag, said.
The state government has deputed chief medical officers of Anantnag and Kulgam to the hospital to oversee the medicare facilities to the injured passengers.
The deputy commissioner of Anantnag has ruled out any sabotage saying the train derailment was prima facie caused by the negligence of the officials.
Railway police officials said there were probably some problems with the brakes of the train that is why it did not stop at the station.
“We were surprised when it did not stop at the station. Then it derailed at some distance from the station. Local people and policemen immediately swung into action and launched rescue operations. We got some 20 people out of the bogeys who were injured and shifted them to hospital,” one of the officials said.
The railways authorities are currently clearing the tracks for other trains. “We are trying to clear the tracks and remove the bogeys so that the train traffic is not affected,” an official said.
