Satellite police on Monday evening busted a gang of thieves involved in several cases of thefts from parked vehicles parked on roads in Shivranjani, Anandnagar and Nehrunagar areas. The three-member gang confessed to having committed more than seven such thefts in these areas in the last few months.

Cops of Satellite police station were out on routine patrolling at 8 pm when they spotted three people standing under the Shivranjani overbridge behaving in a suspicious manner. Following primary investigation, police unearthed that the trio are members of a gang of thieves who used to target vehicles.

The arrested members include Abdul Karim Shaikh, 26, a resident of Sarkhej; Abdul Kadar Shaikh, 43, a resident of Vatva GIDC, and Arvind Rajput, also a resident of Vatva.

Police said they were involved in more than seven incidents of thefts from parked vehicles. Mostly, they used to target cars with laptops. Since it was difficult to unlock new cars, the gang members used to break the glass and steal the laptop. In case of old cars, they used to open it with the help of a duplicate master key. The trio confessed to having committed more than seven such thefts using this modus operandi.

Police also recovered a stolen laptop from their possession. The laptop belonged to one Rajiv Bansal, a resident of Paldi.

Bansal came to Shivranjani in his car and had kept his laptop inside it on February 12. When he returned after finishing his work, he found that it was stolen from his car. Just like Bansal, the gang targeted several other car owners in western part of the city.
