Three labourers died following an accident at the Sabarmati riverfront on Tuesday. The AMC has announced a compensation of Rs2 lakh each to the family members of the deceased.

Contractor PP Patel had employed the trio - Tapas Mandal, Gopal Mandal and Narayan -- at Sabarmati riverfront. Gopal and Narayan had climbed down the 50 feet deep chamber of the interceptor near Usmanpura pumping station on the riverfront.
They entered the chamber to take cement and other material lying there. Sources said that they suffocated due to gas in the chamber. To rescue them, Tapas also entered the chamber and fell unconscious because of the gas there.

AMC issued a statement saying that the trio entered the chamber to remove support of the ceiling of the interceptor slab shutter and that's when the accident took place. The work of interceptor was completed around a month and a half ago. "They were rushed to VS Hospital where doctors on duty declared them brought dead."
