Shaken out of slumber due to people’s action against liquor trafficking on trains on Saturday morning, officials of Government Railway Police (GRP) in Surat swung into action and arrested three persons from different areas late on Saturday night. The trio is believed to be delivery persons, who used to bring liquor from Vapi to Surat daily.

GRP officials conducted raids at three different places late on Saturday night and arrested three persons. They have been identified as Amid Hussain Pathan, 20, a resident of Meghwad Colony, Vastadevi Road, Harish Gaur, 28, and Joginder Swain, 25, both residents of Bilimora in Navsari district. The arrests were made on the basis of information given by passengers and other local persons, who were present when the train was being pelted with stones by bootleggers.

Police sources said that the trio worked as delivery persons for a liquor seller, belonging to minority community, who has big business near Surat railway station and Ashwinikumar Road. They used to bring liquor from Vapi to Surat for the seller daily, and were paid between Rs300-500 for their work. Out of the three, Harish and Joginder have confessed that they were working as labourers, while Hussain is believed to work as a labourer and agent for the liquor seller.

Cops have intensified their search for the liquor seller, but he is said to have absconded  after the incident. Sources further said that the liquor seller has good links with the sellers of neighbouring districts, and so he might have fled either to Bharuch or Navsari.

GRP officials produced the three before a railway court in Surat late on Sunday evening, seeking one-week remand.
