Karim Morani, whose Cineyug Films Private Limited produced blockbuster Hindi movies such as Raja Hindustani and Damini, could be the next to face heat from CBI in the 2G spectrum allocation scam probe.

DNA has in its possession Cineyug balance sheet for fiscal 2009-2010, which proves that the entertainment company received an “unsecured loan” of Rs212 crore from Kusegaon Fruits & Vegetables Private Limited and in turn made an advance payment of Rs214 crore to DMK’s Kalaignar TV.

This Rs214 crore is under the CBI scanner as it could be bribe for a favourable spectrum allocation. Disgraced former telecom minister A Raja, in whose regime the 2G spectrum scam took place, is a DMK leader.

The balance sheet also shows transactions between Vinod Goenka and Cineyug. Goenka is a partner in DB group, whose Shahid Usman Balwa is also being probed by CBI.

The agency is zeroing in on Morani on the basis of disclosures made by Kusegaon’s Asif Balwa and Rajiv Aggarwal in its custody.
“Scrutiny of financial transactions of Cineyug has confirmed a payment of Rs214 crore to Chennai-based Kalaignar TV. In the course of interrogation, Asif and Rajiv have given us leads that Morani played a key role in the entire transaction and even got commission for allowing the use of his company’s bank account for the transaction. It confirms his involvement in the 2G scam,” an agency official said.

Though CBI has arrested Asif and Rajiv, no action has been taken so far against the receiver of the money.

“Sharad Kumar of Kalaignar TV and Morani of Cineyug haven’t been taken into custody, despite Cineyug making transactions and Kalaignar receiving money,” a relative of Asif said.

CBI confronted DB Realty’s Shahid Usman Balwa’s cousin Asif and Kusegaon Realty director Rajiv on Thursday on the Rs200-crore transaction.

Kusegaon Realty promoted by Asif and Rajiv holds a 49% stake in Cineyug, while the Moranis hold the remaining 51%.
Karim Morani has been questioned by CBI and the enforcement directorate on many occasions, but hasn’t been arrested yet.
