More than 2,600 posts are lying vacant in the state finance department, figures provided by the state government show. The number of vacant posts is more than one-fourth of the sanctioned strength of the department.

"As of July 15, 2011, the sanctioned strength of the finance department and offices that function under it is 9,727, of which 7,092 posts are filled and 2,635 posts are lying vacant," state finance minister Vaju Vala said in a written reply in the assembly.

The reply was in response to an unstarred question by Congress MLA from Porbandar, Arjun Modhwadia.

The vacant posts comprise many high and middle level posts such as those of deputy secretary, deputy section officers, joint commercial tax commissioner, deputy commercial tax commissioner, commercial tax officer, commercial tax inspector, joint director, deputy director, accountants and deputy accountants, among others.

A large number of posts of stenographers, senior and junior clerks, typists, supervisors, drivers, operators, peons, among others are also lying vacant in the finance department and related offices.

"The large number of vacancies is affecting the functioning of various departments, but the state government doesn't seem concerned by the vacant posts," Modhwadia alleged.

Vala said the sanctioned strength of the finance department is 336, of which 102 are lying vacant. The sanctioned strength of the state commissionerate of commercial taxes at Ahmedabad is 4,964 of which 1,452 are vacant. Similarly, out of 4,339 sanctioned posts, the directorate of accounts & treasury, Gandhinagar, has 1,053 vacant posts.
