23 pilgrims killed as truck falls into gorge in Uttarakhand

Heavy rains and floods over the last two days have left six others dead and thrown life out of gear in the state. Several important roads were washed away in the heavy floods due to which a large number of villages are cut off.

Twenty three pilgrims from Haryana were today killed when a truck in which they were travelling fell into a gorge in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, which has been lashed by torrential rains during the last two days.

The incident took place at Dabrani on Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway about 70kms from here when the truck, which was on its on way to Gangotri, fell into the 150 meter-deep gorge killing 23 'Kanwarias'( shiv devotees), Uttarkashi district magistrate Saurabh Jain said.

20 bodies have been fished out by the police and the Indo Tibetan Border Police personnel, he said, adding that efforts are on to extricate three more bodies from the accident site.

Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank has also ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.

A vital stretch of Raipur-Chamba road was also washed away due to heavy floods in the river Song in Dehradun, where large areas have been inundated leading to loss of property after last night's torrential rains that broke a 44-year record.

HESCO Gaon, a model village at Shuklapur area, was also hit badly due to floods in river Asan following which noted environmentalists Sunderlal Bahuguna and Anil Joshi were forced to shift elsewhere in the city.

Power generation in the state  improved to 18-19 million units today after a fall of 4-5 million units yesterday when a series of power houses were shut down due to heavy silt in the major rivers.

The Upper Ganga canal at Haridwar, however, remained closed today due to which two power projects-Mohamadpur and Pathari were shut down.

The water level in the Ganga and Yamuna rose above the danger level. Authorities have issued an alert to the nearby border districts of Muzaffarnagar and Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh after the Ganga crossed the danger level in Haridwar yesterday inundating a large number of villages in the district and destroying crops.

Traffic to Chardham tourist circuit comprising Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines also affected due to lanslides at number of places.
