22,000 fined in Delhi for using tinted glass on vehicles

Over 22,000 people were challaned in the national capital this year during a drive against use of tinted glass on vehicles even as people are now voluntarily removing the film, police said.

"Many of these were repeat offenders who did not mind paying fine again but did not want to remove their costly films," Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (Traffic), said.

In this instance, he said, the rule book came to their rescue where police discovered that apart from prosecution, they can give directions to remove defect, impound a document to ensure compliance in three days failing which challan and the document could be sent to the court.

In first 59 days of this year, Garg said, traffic police prosecuted more than 22,000 people for having tinted glasses.

"Saturday was an unforgettable day when in a day 205 vehicle owners voluntarily removed films exceeding limitations themselves and pleaded they may not been given directions in this regard as they were doing it on the spot rather than waiting for 72 hours time," he said.

Directions were given to 227 people on Saturday to remove the films from their vehicles and produce the vehicle before police within 72 hours, he said.

"I was told there were queues in front of workshops to get the films removed. It gave the good feeling that Commonwealth Games days are coming back and people are again following rules. Like during the Commonwealth Games, the capital started behaving itself," he said.

According to rules, there should be at least 70% transparency in the front and rear windows and 50% transparency on the side windows.
