The Nanavati commission will conduct the cross-examination of former additional chief secretary (home) Ashok Narayan and former DGP of the state K Chakravarthy on Tuesday.

They are likely to be asked questions regarding their presence at the meeting called by chief minister Narendra Modi on the night of February 27, 2002.

Earlier, the commission, which is enquiring into the communal riots of 2002, had suo motu summoned five top officers who had held key positions during the riot period.

Besides Ashok Narayan and K Chakravarthy, the probe panel had summoned the then home secretary K Nityanandam; Ahmedabad police commissioner PC Pandey; and Anil Mukim, the then principal secretary to the chief minister.

Though no official reason has been given for the summons issued by the probe panel, sources close to the development said that the Nanavati commission had summoned the officers in connection with the questioning of IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.

Last month, the commission had concluded Bhatt’s questioning in connection with the affidavit the IPS officer had filed in the Supreme Court.

In his affidavit, Bhatt has alleged that chief minister Narendra Modi had asked officers during the meeting on the night of February 27, 2002, to let Hindus vent their anger. Bhatt has also alleged in his affidavit that Modi had told the officers at the meeting that Muslims should be taught a lesson.

The sources further said all the five officers summoned by the commission were present at the meeting called by Modi on February 27, 2002, reportedly to review the law and order situation in the state.

Earlier that day, 59 karsevaks returning from Ayodhya by the Sabarmati Express train were charred to death at Godhra railway station when an angry mob set fire to their compartment.
