1 killed, 5 injured in fire at pen factory in Daman

One person was burnt alive, while five others sustained minor injuries, after a fire broke out at a pen manufacturing unit in Daman today, the police said.

"A fire broke out in the three storeyed building of Flair Writing Instrument company in the wee hours at Somnath Industrial area. One Jitendra Balwant Bhandari, 28, an employee who was working in the night shift died in the fire," inspector general of police Muktesh Chandra said.

Five others trapped inside the building who had sustained minor injuries were later rescued by the fire officials, he said.

Investigations are underway to find the reason behind the fire, in which the three-storey building was gutted, they said.

The police claimed that the firm was operating sans any proper fire safety equipment.
