As Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi completed his fast at Ahwa in the Dangs district on Tuesday evening, the state election commission announced that elections to 10,509 village panchayats in the state will be held on December 29. With this, the model code of conduct has come into force in the areas of all 26 districts where the elections are scheduled. This means the CM will now not be able to announce development schemes in the districts where his Sadbhavna fasts would take place.

Sources close to the CM indicated that as the model code of conduct is not applicable to urban and semi-urban areas (municipal corporations and municipalities), there are chances that the CM would complete his Sadbhavana fasts in these areas. Apart from Ahmedabad, there are still seven municipal corporations where he is going to fast. The CM has planned his fast in Bhavnagar on December 3.

The elections have been announced after the CM prepared the turf for winning the maximum village panchayats. While he has announced grants worth crores of rupees during his Sadbhavna fasts at the district places, he has also made offers of providing financial assistance to the ‘Samras Villages’ in recently concluded best village panchayat awards ceremony in Gandhinagar.

PS Shah, secretary of state election commission, gave the details about the village panchayat elections. The notification for the elections will issued on December 10 and the voting will take place on December 29. Counting will be held on December 31.

For 10,509 village panchyats, 23,058 polling stations will be set up and more than 1.68 crore voters of rural Gujarat will vote for their panchayat representatives. More than 3,000 election officers, more than 1.15 lakh polling personnel and 39,880 policemen will be deployed on election duty.

When asked about the recent announcement of financial assistance to the panchayats going for Samras village, Shah said: “The model code of conduct comes into force from today. SEC can do nothing if the state government announced any development scheme or financial assistance earlier, as at that time the elections had not been announced and there was non code of
conduct in force.”
