After videos showing police thrashing women who were protesting lack of safety measures at BHU surfaced on social media, the varsity’s students on Sunday submitted a letter to the administration demanding, among other things, a gender sensitisation committee against sexual harassment (GSCASH) and round-the-clock security.

On Saturday night, police lathi-charged BHU students who had taken to the streets after a woman was molested on the campus. One of the clips being shared online shows policemen running towards female students and thrashing blindly at them. Another shows women with bandaged heads and legs narrating their side of the story. “There were many policemen who were beating us up. I sustained injuries to my head,” one says. Other demands of the students are: action against molesters; ascertaining proctor’s responsibility; well-lit campus and CCTV cameras.
