A brave woman entrepreneur who saw a youth allegedly abusing and slapping his girlfriend in South Mumbai in the wee hours of Sunday, not only intervened and ensured that the girl is not embarrassed and humiliated further in public, but also gave the man a taste of woman power. She also called the police and ensured that the situation did not go out of control.

Recalling the incident, CEO and Founder of Vu Televisions and Girgaum resident Devita Saraf said, “Around 2 am, I was passing through a lane leading to my home when I saw a guy slapping a girl. When I confronted the man, he said: If she behaves like this, obviously I am going to slap her, no? The girl on the other hand was repeatedly pleading with him to return her purse.” She said that both the boy and the girl were not drunk either.

“I asked the girl who he is and she said he was her boyfriend. I then told the man that this is Mumbai and such an attitude towards women is not accepted here. And to the girl, I simply said “leave him”. More drama, more slaps, more match refereeing on my side ensued till I called the nearby police,” Saraf posted on her Facebook account.

According to Saraf, what was more shocking was the gutless attitude of people who stood mute spectators to this 30-minute episode. “The boy continued to slap while two other male friends stood watching. There were other people too around, but they just did not do anything to save the girl. After I intervened and also asked a security guard to help, the man got angry. When the police arrived, the couple was negotiating for a while and the man looked scared,” she said.

Saraf felt that the girl was not looking for an escape. “It is more like she was trying to gain the man’s sympathy. I told her that she will get another man in her life, but she had a sense of helplessness. I feel the girl was more responsible for what was being meted out to her,” Saraf said.

When DNA contacted senior police inspector Netaji Bhopale of Gamdevi Police Station, he said he was unaware about the incident.
