ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Barua's mother Miliki Barua on Thursday died following old-age ailments at her residence in Assam's Dibrugarh district, the family said.

She was 88, and is survived by her four sons, including Barua, and a daughter. Her another son was killed by unidentified persons at the height of insurgency in the state. The octogenarian woman was ailing for the past several months due to old-age complications and was admitted to a private hospital last month but was later discharged.

She died at 11:10 am at her residence in Jeraigaon village under Chabua Police Station of the district. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had extended an assistance of Rs one lakh to her for treatment which she refused to accept and asked him to spend it on flood-affected people. The Chief Minister had also announced that if Barua wished to visit his ailing mother, the state government would consider it on humanitarian grounds which was also rejected by the ULFA's commander-in-chief.

Gogoi condoled Miliki Baruah's death saying that she was a social activist and religious person who worked for the people and her death was an irreparable loss.

The ULFA (Independent), led by Barua, also expressed grief over the passing away of Miliki Baruah. "We offer our deep obeisance to a woman whose strength, courage, idealism and sacrifice as a mother will be an example for several generations", the outfit's Publicity Secretary Arunodoy Asom statement e-mailed said.

The outfit also offered their deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
