Trimbakeshwar temple row: Locals laud Trupti Desai's detention

Residents of Nandur Shingote, who are opposed to Bhumata Brigade activists entering Trimbakeshwar temple, on Monday celebrated after Trupti Desai and her supporters were detained by the police.

Desai, who led Bhumata Brigade activists to break the gender barrier at the temple, condemned the police action and asked where the acche din had gone. "Police ki dadagiri nhi chalegi. CM kahan hain aap? Kahan gye achhe din? Ye mahilaon ka apmaan hai. (Police actions are not right. Where is the Chief Minister? Where are good days? This is insult to women.)," Desai said as she being arrested.

Her supporters raised slogans and demanded equal rights for women. They also raised slogans against the police. Desai had earlier demanded that women should be allowed to enter the inner sanctum of Trimbakeshwar temple on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.

Meanwhile, the temple trust has maintained that the ban on entry of women is based on tradition, claiming that no objection has ever been raised on the same.The ancient Trimbakeshwar temple, located 30 km from Nashik, is a major shrine of Lord Shiva having 12 'jyotirlingas', drawing devotees from far and wide.
