TEDxGateway 2015 draws the curtain on a successful event

While many speakers flew from half way across the globe for the talk, some flew in from the flood-hit Chennai. Lydian N, an eight-year-old who learnt piano just 18 months ago, put up a stellar performance, was the surprise child-prodigy act, which marked the end of the event.

The stage was set. The spotlight, on. The audience glued to the red dot. And suddenly, there was a huge round of applause and cheers coming from every corner of the auditorium as John Rives came on stage to announce TEDx Gateway 2015 open.

Starting with the youngest Indian speaker, Ishitia Katyal, all of 10, TEDx Mumbai chapter was on roll for the sixth time at the NCPA. The platform this year saw a mix of people from technology, finance, entertainment, education and much more.

The list of speakers ranged from Suresh Prabhu, the railway minister, to technological innovators like Danny Cabrera (bio-3D printing), Kshitij Marwah (360-degree camera) and Harsh Songra (My Child app) etc., healthcare innovator Dr. Kanav Kahol (Swasthya Slate), tiger conservationist Hans Dalal and many more.

One of the talks that aimed to bring about a change in human behaviour was that of Siddharth Chakravarty, who spoke about the dark, corrupt and inhuman side of the fishing industry. Captain Raghu Raman, on the other hand, spoke about how caste, religion do not exist in the army and what drives soldiers to fight, is not the hate for the enemy, but the love for his countrymen.

Another moving speech came from photo-journalist Sudhakar Olwe, his portrayal of the lives of BMC sweepers and cleaners, bringing to light the atrocities and poor living condition they and the generations before and after them was and might be subjected to live in.

Stepping out of the conference, it’s a flood of ideas and insights; things that urged many to look at the world with a different perspective, aiming to bring about a small change; even if it is as small as smiling at the housekeeping staff you come across the next moment.
