Surat's Indian Diamond Institute churns out 140 new grads

Twelve students were awarded gold medal in various courses at the 34th convocation held in Surat on Sunday.

The Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) celebrated its 34th convocation ceremony at its campus in Vesu, Surat on Sunday. Along with conferring awards and degrees, the students were also asked to carve a fruitful career in the gems industry. Top diamond industrialists were also present on the occasion.

In the convocation, 140 students were handed their degree certificates, while of them, 12 were awarded gold medals for their excellence in different courses. Terming the day as important, the institute asked students to remain focused, as they will be entering into the practical field from the world of theories.

"We welcome you all in the diamond and jewellery industry and it is a moment of pride that the industry is getting 140 fresh and talented minds, which are brimming with new ideas. There is lot of opportunity in the sector and anybody can make a fortune, if person is focused towards goal," Aagam Sanghavi, chairman of IDI, said.

Aagam further said that though IDI is looked at as a college in Surat, it is a renowned institute for the rest of the world. Efforts are being made to provide more qualitative education to students.

Rajiv Jain, chairman of GJEPC, who was the chief guest in the function, said that Surtis were lucky to have such a world-class institute at their doorstep.

"Size of gems and jewellery business in India is $43 million and it is expected to grow at least 10-12% every year. Two million people are working in this sector and we still need a million more in the near future. This can be possible only through institutes like IDI," Jain said.

He added that initiative is being made to develop a Centre of Excellence at Khambat- known for coloured stones, with help of central and state government. The centre is expected to be ready within 2-3 months.

Samir Joshi, executive director of IDI asked diamond and jewellery brands to work with IDI, so that quality talent can be produced, which can understand industry current trend and its requirement.
