Twenty students of Jawaharlal Nehru University were issued show cause notices by the administration in connection to the Afzal Guru event row, with their names given to the administration and then to the police by ABVP leader Saurabh Sharma in his official complaint.

A total of 21 students were issued show cause notices including Sharma himself. While most of the students have been found guilty of violating the discipline and conduct of the university, some students among the 21 have been accused of serious charges including disturbing communal harmony.

Show cause notices to Umar Khalid and Anirban read that they have, "been found guilty of arousing communal, caste or regional feeling or creating disharmony among students.

"Furnishing false certificates or false information in any manner to the university. Arousing communal, caste or regional feeling or creating disharmony among students," reads the letter to Umar and Anirban.

The notice further reads,"Causing or colluding in the unauthorised entry of any person into the campus or in the unauthorised occupation of any portion of the University premises, including hall of residences, by any person".

This particular portion is also part of the notice to Ashutosh Kumar who was also accused of sedition by the Delhi police.

The five-member panel, constituted on February 10 by the university became a target of the JNU teachers association not only for not including members belonging to SC/ST community, but also for the decision to 'arbitrarily' suspend eight JNU students, six of whom were charged with sedition, including Kanhaiya Kumar.
