Student wings of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) clashed in TMC-ruled region of Bagdogra in West Bengal during college polls on Thursday. At least four students were injured in the incident.
The Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) and BJP-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) blamed each other for violence.
"The TMC members pelted stones at us when we came to file nomination papers. We also retaliated by throwing stones at them but the police sided with them and baton charged us," said Ganesh Kamti, an ABVP member based in Bagdogra town.
Police baton charged and chased away the agitated students to bring the situation under control. Recently, there have sporadic clashes between BJP and TMC workers for political turf in the states. The elections will be held from January 13 and to January 29 in various colleges.
