In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare had written, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.".

But we say, there's lots in a name, especially when it can help you reach the right address!

For all those who found it difficult to navigate in Gandhinagar as most of the roads were named after alphabets, here's good news.

The state road and building department has decided to rename the main roads and circles in the capital after great Indian personalities and the chief minister's five sector development plans, like Swami Vivekanand, Narmad, Sardar Patel, Dr Ambedakar and Jalshakti, Gyanshakti, Urjashakti etc.

The circles will be renamed after Indian values and traditions like Sanskruti, Yoga, Neeti, Satya, Ahimsa, Karuna, Dharm, among others.

The central vista of Gandhinagar, which is spread from Gandhinagar railway station to the Sabarmati riverbank, would be known as ‘Swarnim Park’.

The decision in this regard was taken by state revenue minister Anandiben Patel.

A government resolution (GR) issued on May 4, 2011 stated that the main roads and circles in the capital have not been named since the city was founded.

Till now vertical roads in the capital were known as K, Kh, G, Gh, Ch, Chh and J and horizontal roads were named after numbers from 1 to 7.

The state government has been considering naming roads and 32 circles to make it easy for the citizens to remember. However, some feel that it will be tough to remember the new names as well.

Many government employees from the state secretariat residing in Gandhinagar are wondering why the government had not named the roads and circles in the last 10 years of its administration of the city.

Some officials say since the Congress has won the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation election, they may name the roads after their leaders and to stop them from doing so the state  R & B department is renaming the roads.
