Police warn of action against rumour-mongers

The Capital was strife with rumours about scuffles outside many ATMs on Saturday.

There was panic after a video of a mall being looted in Seelampur surfaced on social media. The video showed people climbing and throwing goods and taking them. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) AK Singla said: "No mall has been looted in this area and nor has any police officer visited it. We have not received any complaint."

In Chandni Chowk, there was another rumour that four people were injured in a stampede outside an ATM. However, senior police officers were quick to defuse the situation. "There is no stampede outside any #Bank or #ATM in #ChandniChowk. Please don't spread or come under the influence of any #Rumour! We will also be taking cognisance of all social media accounts which are spreading #Rumours!! It's an offence under section 505 of IPC. (sic)," said DCP(North) Madhur Verma in a series of tweets.

In North Delhi, a raging mob, waiting for hours to withdraw money at an ATM in Sabzi Mandi, pelted stones, smashed the glass doors of the bank, and thrashed the security guard. The clash was triggered after two boys made a second attempt to withdraw money, and when stopped by the guard, they got into a scuffle with him.

Within seconds, there was a free for all and the mob vandalised the bank as officials were seen ducking and taking shelter under desks inside the bank. The violence left some people wounded, who had to be rushed to a nearby hospital for first aid.

A senior police officer told DNA explained how the incident had occurred. "When the security guard asked the duo to leave the premises, one of them pushed the guard. They started hitting him and he retaliated.

"Police officers deployed at the banks intervened and took control of the situation. A Daily Diary entry was made by the police regarding the incident. One of the two accused is yet to be identified. No complaint has so far been given by the bank."

The Police Control Room (PCR) received around 3,900 calls related to banks and ATMs on Friday till 9 pm and 4,531 calls on Saturday till 6pm.

As many as 3,400 personnel of paramilitary forces and the Delhi Police and 200 Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) have been deployed at ATMs and banks across the Capital. In addition to this, RAF jawans were also deployed at certain locations of the city to monitor the situation. Senior officers of Delhi Police were also present at important junctions to oversee the security arrangements.
