A day after 1,420 Higher Secondary Certificate Schools (HSC) and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam answer sheets were burnt at a stocking centre in Beed, the board has now clarified that there won't be any re-exam for students whose papers have been destroyed in the lot.

At around 7.30 pm on Saturday evening, a supervisor saw smoke emerging out of a centre in Kaij tehsil in which papers of Class X and XII were kept. After he rushed to the room, he found the papers burnt.

The room consisted of 1,199 answer sheets of class XII Mathematics and around 229 answer sheets of Urdu and Vocational Education papers for Class X. While the board is yet to ascertain the cause of the fire, students from seven centres in the tehsil, including Vasant Mahavidyalaya, Ramrao Patil Junior College, Purshottam Dada Sonawane College, Shyam Junior college and others are likely to be awarded average marks as per the board's policy in such cases.

Shakuntala Kale, chairperson of the state board, said that students need not panic as no re-exam would be conducted. "An investigation is ongoing in the case but the board would like to clarify that there won't be any re-exam. In the next few days the board shall take a call on what needs to be done," said Kale. When asked if students would be allotted average marks, she said that the board would follow the rules and will find a solution.

In similar cases, the board accounts the average of all the remaining subjects, which is considered as the score for the papers which are missing or destroyed.

HISTORY REPEATED

  • In 2017, 186 students, whose answer sheets were stolen from Dahisar’s Isra Vidyalaya, were awarded average marks after their papers were not found.
