Workers in private and government jobs have different reasons to ask for leaves. They sometimes get innovative and cite unique reasons to get their leaves sanctioned. However, an overworked and tired constable in Uttar Pradesh took it to another level when he cited ‘expanding family’ as the reason to seek a month’s leave to go home and be with his wife.

The constable identified as Som Singh, posted at Kotwali, Mahoba district in Bundelkhand, wrote in the reason column of leave requisition slip “parivar badhane ke liye” (for expanding family). The constable was married a year back and was seeking leave ever to be with his newly-wed wife. His request in the past was, however, denied.

But this time, his senior officer added 15 more days and sanctioned him a 45-day leave, apparently thinking that 30 days may not be enough for the policeman.

“Recommended earned leave for 45 days for family development,” the SHO wrote while sanctioning leave for the constable.

However, when the leave application went viral on social media and people started making fun of the Uttar Pradesh Police, the Constable was directed to withdraw the earlier application and fill a new one.

“The leave application which is in circulation in the social media is fake. It was filled by the constable and it does not bear my signature,” clarified SP City N. Kolanchi. Som Singh also denied that he gave any such reason for seeking one month’s leave.

In the past, there are cases of police personnel giving unconventional reasons for seeking leaves as they hardly get any off from duty.

In one such case, a policeman had sought leave for ten days to prevent his wife from leaving him. He had told his bosses that his wife had threatened to divorce him if he did not come home immediately.
