Till now, Congress President Sonia Gandhi's “inner voice” was attributed to her relinquishing the post of Prime Minister when she had the chance in 2004. But according to Natwar Singh's autobiography One Life is not enough, it was Rahul Gandhi who stopped his mother from taking the top job.
According to Singh, Rahul Gandhi was afraid that Sonia Gandhi would also meet the same fate as his father and grandmother if she became Prime Minister. Hence Rahul, who is extremely protective of his mother, was adamant that she should not take up the job. Natwar claims that Rahul gave his mother one day to make up her mind. Sonia Gandhi was agonised and in tears, but finally agreed to Rahul's words and decided to announce Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister.
