Many filmmakers have received letters from the Union minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi this week about the law on sexual harassment at work. Gandhi's office said that the letters were to ensure that production houses provide a secure environment for the women working there.

Filmmakers and producers who received the letter include Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Ekta Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt, Shahrukh Khan, Sooraj Barjatya, Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Anil Ambani, Aamir Khan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Pritish Nandy, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Subhash Ghai.

Gandhi said that the letter intends to inform them about the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition Redressal) Act 2013, so that they can implement it immediately.

"The aim of this law is to ensure that no woman is sexually harassed at her workplace," the letter said. "This is to be followed in letter and spirit by all organisations in the country and I expect you to personally lead these efforts with sincerity and commitment, in accordance with all the applicable laws.

"Any institution that comes under the purview of the Act is ethically and legally accountable to provide a safe, secure and inclusive work environment for the safety of not only their direct employees, but all outsourced and temporary staff as well."

Gandhi's letter comes days after the Finance Minister ceded to her long-standing demand to amend the Companies Act, 2013 to ensure that it is mandatory for all companies and institutions that come under the Act to constitute an internal complaints committee to report sexual harassment at the workplace.

Last month, the ministry had launched a complaint portal — SHe-Box — for government employees to lodge sexual harassment complaints online.
