The Principal of Fergusson College, who had written to police to take action against students for raising 'anti-national' slogans on the campus during a verbal clash between two groups, retracted his statement on Wednesday, saying it was a 'typing error'.

The move taken by Principal RG Pardeshi took everyone by surprise as his decision to withdraw the statement came less than 24 hours after him dashing off a letter to the police.

However, according to sources who did not wish to be named, the Principal was reportedly ordered from Delhi not to go ahead with any such action.

"The order to retract the statement came from the national capital as the sedition complaint in the incident would have been on Sujat Ambedkar, the great grandson of the chief architect of India's Constitution Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar," the source said.

Meanwhile, the Principal has also been summoned to Mumbai by state Education Minister Vinod Tawde on Wednesday to give an explanation on the incident.

ABVP activists and some students from Left organisations on Tuesday had a heated argument during an 'informal' discussion organised by the ABVP on 'Truth of JNU' at the Fergusson College campus.

Sujat, who is the son of RPI leader and former MP Prakash Ambedkar had apparently gone to counter the ABVP meeting. "We did not raise any anti-national slogans during our protest," Sujat Ambedkar told a news agency.

While Pardeshi said no permission was granted to the ABVP delegation to hold the meeting on the campus, an ABVP spokesman said college authorities had told them that since it was supposed to be an informal interaction with the Fergusson students, there was no need for a formal nod from them.

Meanwhile, the Sambhaji Brigade has also jumped into the war of words and has questioned why the college had granted permission to ABVP.

Police said they were examining CCTV footage recorded at the college campus to determine if any untoward incident had taken place.
