You can now withdraw cash from multiplexes as you catch up with your favourite movie.

Starting today (November 26), 106 multiplexes operated by Inox Leisure across the country, in association with the State Bank of India (SBI), will help ease the difficulties faced by people wanting to withdraw cash from automated teller machines (ATMs). The tie-up with SBI has made it India’s first multiplex chain to launch the initiative.

Almost all of Inox’s multiplexes will now become quasi ATMs offering the convenience of withdrawing up to Rs 2,000 cash per card per day, by simply swiping their debit cards.

Speaking to DNA, Siddharth Jain, director, Inox Leisure Ltd (Inox), said the cash withdrawal facility was already introduced on Friday (November 25) at 17 locations across six cities of Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi, to start with.

“These facilities have already been integrated with SBI. Work on integrating the other facilities will be completed by Friday evening and customers will be able to withdraw cash by using their debit card at our 106 multiplexes across the country,” said Jain, adding that the move was a joint decision aimed at assisting the government in achieving their objectives of the demonetization drive and building a progressive economy.

Inox receives almost 2 lakh people patronising their multiplexes daily across India.

“We think this initiative would not only help our patrons but also the citizens at large to come to our cinema and use it almost like an ATM,” said Jain.

Earlier this week, Kishore Biyani-promoted Future Retail had announced a similar initiative across its Big Bazaar and fbb stores. Similarly, the government had also allowed cash withdrawal by swiping debit cards at 2,500 petrol pumps using SBI point of sale (PoS) machines across the country.

Jain said that prior to demonetization, almost 35% of the overall ticket bookings at Inox were cashless and done through various online and mobile application platforms.

“There was a large percentage of people buying movie tickets by paying in cash at the ticket counters. However, post demonetization, the percentage of people buying tickets online has shot up significantly. As cash transactions are already seeing a decline, we hope to move to a cashless society in the future,” said Jain.

Jain confirmed that the cash withdrawal facility will be on until December 30, 2016.
