Dressed in a salmon pink shirt, Achyuta Nanda Sahu smiled for a selfie with the locals. ‘At Dantewada Chhatishgarh Election Yatra,’ he captioned the photographs on his Facebook wall. Hours later, Sahu was dead. 

The Doordarshan cameraperson, who was part of the crew for election coverage in Chhattisgarh, was killed in an attack by the Naxals in Dantewada’s Aranpur area. Two security personnel were also martyred in the attack.

Sahu was from Odisha’s Loisingha and had studied at Birmaharajpur College. The ‘video journalist’ had covered several events for the national broadcaster. 

 

DD News had deputed team to cover Chhattisgarh polls, comprising of camera person-Achyuta Nanda Sahu, Dheeraj Kumar and MM Sharma. The national broadcaster also expressed anguish and said, ‘The entire DD Nnews Family salutes his service and stands by his family in this hour of grief.’

Reacting to the shocking news, information and Broadcasting minister Rajyavardhan Rathore said, ‘stand in solidarity with family of the camerman, we will take care of his family. We salute all those mediapersons who go for coverage in such dangerous situations, remember their bravery.’

 

‘These insurgents will NOT weaken our resolve. We WILL prevail,’ Rathore said on Twitter. 

‘Prasar Bharati parivar condoles the death of Cameraman Achyutananda Sahu earlier today near Dantewada in Chhatisgarh. Our prayers with his family during this difficult moment,’ Prasar Bharati said on Twitter.

 

The Naxals have called upon voters to boycott the Chhatisgarh Assembly Elections, scheduled to be held in two phases next month.

The first phase of polls will be held on November 12 covering 18 constituencies across eight Naxal-affected districts namely Bastar, Kanker Sukma, Bijapur, Dantewada, Narayanpur, Kondagaon and Rajnandgaon.

The remaining 72 constituencies will go to polls on November 20.

The counting of votes will be taken up on December 11.
