Haryana to set up educational institute in name of Pampore martyr Captain Pawan Kumar

Haryana government on Friday said it will set up an educational institute in the name of martyr Capt Pawan Kumar who died while fighting militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district last month.

Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma made the announcement while replying to a question by MLA Prem Lata during the Question Hour in the budget session of the Haryana Assembly. Twenty three-year-old Capt Kumar hailed from Badhana village in Jind district.

Replying to a question by MLA Aseem Goel, he also announced setting up an educational institution in the name of 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh in Lakhnaur, a known pilgrimage site, in this fiscal. Sharma said the Education Department had sent a requisition for filling up 20,000 vacancies to the Haryana Staff Selection Commission and recruitment would be done soon.

The process of appointment of teachers was also being speeded up, he replied to a question by Leader of Opposition Abhay Singh Chautala and MLA Goel. Apart from this, work of landfilling in the schools, which get flooded during rains, would begin on a war-footing in the new academic session, he said.

Excise and Taxation Minister Capt Abhimanyu said the state government has collected revenue of Rs 4,922.74 crore from sale of diesel between October 2014 and February 2016 by imposing VAT or surcharge.

In October 2014, the rate of tax on diesel was 8.8 per cent, the effective rate was 9.24 per cent including surcharge of five per cent on tax payable. On November 26, 2014, the rate of tax on diesel was revised to 11.5 per cent, the effective rate is 12.075 per cent including surcharge.

Similarly, on July 16, 2015, the rate of tax on diesel was again revised to 16.4 per cent, the effective rate is 17.22 per cent including surcharge.
