Even as the Central government on Sunday said it was ready to face the onslaught on demonetization in the upcoming month-long winter session of the Parliament, scheduled to begin from November 15, the issue has brought the Opposition together with even the arch rivals the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Left joining hands. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday spoke to President Pranab Mukherjee and later said that he has agreed to meet representatives of political parties over the issue. Her party leaders in Delhi are trying to scramble other parties as well, so she could lead a united Opposition delegation to the President. "The Hon President was kind enough to take my call. I briefed him about how common people are suffering because of demonetization," Mamata tweeted on Sunday.

Earlier, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said the government was ready to face the Opposition if it wants to raise the issue of demonetization in the Parliament. The government sources also here said the decision to demonetize Rs1,000 and Rs500 notes have struck hard on black money hoarders and armed insurgencies across the country. The government sources said as per their reports Maoists had stashed over Rs7,000 crore at their dumps in Bastar region, which are now no more than piece of papers. They had collected this money through levy and extortion and kept cash with them or in the dumps in forests for their activities and distribution among their cadres and supporters.

Congress deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma had said his party will prominently raise the issue in the Parliament. He had said that the move has made the common man stand in long queues for hours to get his money exchanged. Another senior leader Kapil Sibal had said the government should have given a comprehensive thought before taking the decision. "This is a decision made in haste" it is "not a well thought out decision", Sibal said.

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi getting emotional over inconvenience caused to the common man over the government's demonetization step, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the PM was now facing concrete reality. In a series of tweets, the Congress vice-president said, 'First laughter now tears! Mediocrity comes face to face with reality.' 'If trucks go off the roads, supply of essentials across the country will be paralysed. Hope Mr Modi has a plan for this,' he said in another tweet while pointing at the liquidity crunch. Rahul had earlier tweeted about a smiling Modi during the latter's visit to Japan recently. 'Modi laughs as poor cry,' he had tweeted. The Prime Minister got emotional while addressing a function at Panaji on Sunday over the problems being faced by people after the demonetisation of Rs500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.
