As the country mourns the death of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Central Government has announced a seven-day state mourning throughout the country. The tri-colour will be flown at half-mast during the time.

BJP President Amit Shah addressed reporters, saying, "At 9 am tomorrow his mortal remains will be taken to BJP headquarters and at 1 pm his last journey will begin. Funeral will be held at 4 pm at Smriti Sthal."

Around 25, 000 Delhi Police personnel will be pressed into service on Friday to avoid any untoward incidents. Apart from Delhi Police personnel, CRPF, CISF, RAF, the bomb squad and dogs will be pressed into action. Delhi Police snipers will also be deployed at all building on the proposed route.

The state governments have also decided to pay a rich tribute to the party stalwart and poet-politician. The Uttar Pradesh government has declared a public holiday on Friday.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has also called for a seven-day mourning and a public holiday. Similarly, the Jharkhand Government has declared a seven-day mourning in memory of Vajpayee. Other states like Bihar and Haryana have also declared a public holiday.

 A seven-day state mourning was announced by the government as a mark of respect to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away today.
 

In a circular, the Home Ministry said the national flag would fly at half-mast from today for seven days across India and a state funeral would be accorded to Vajpayee.

The government also said the state funeral of Vajpayee will be held at Delhi's Smriti Sthal tomorrow and declared a half day holiday in all central government offices, central public sector undertakings across the country and the Delhi government offices of NCT of Delhi. 

"As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, it has been decided that seven days of state mourning will be observed throughout India from August 16-22, both days inclusive. 

The BJP government in Gujarat has declared a public holiday tomorrow as a mark of respect for former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who died in Delhi this evening.

 

All the state government and semi-government offices, schools, colleges and universities will remain closed tomorrow, the day when Vajpayee's last rites will be performed in Delhi, stated an official release.

The state government has also announced a seven-day mourning beginning today (August 16).

"During this period, the tricolour will fly half mast at the government buildings and offices across Gujarat," it stated. PTI

 

Odisha government declared a public holiday on Friday and a seven-day state mourning as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee who passed away in New Delhi today, an official release said.

State Governor Ganeshi Lal and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep grief over the demise of Vajpayee.

Patnaik, who had served as union minister for steel and mines in the Vajpayee government from March 1998 to March 2000 before assuming the office of Odisha chief minister, said: "It is a great national loss today as much as a personal loss for me."

"During this period, the national flag will be flown at half mast throughout India where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment during the period of the state mourning," the Home Ministry said.

The national flag would also fly half mast Fridayin all Indian missions abroad.

The 93-year-old leader passed away at AIIMS here following prolonged illness.
