Gurdaspur Superintendent of Police (SP), Salwinder Singh, who was under National Investigation Agency's scanner in connection to the Pathankot Airforce station terror attack, was booked under rape charges by the Punjab police.

According to police, the SP's location is yet to be ascertained and has not been in touch with any of his colleagues in the police force.  The Senior Superintendent of Police in Gurdaspur confirmed about an FIR being lodged against Singh and said that action will be taken as per law.

According to police, the case was registered against Salwinder Singh after a woman’s husband filed a complaint against him through the Chief Minister’s online sangat darshan. SSP Jagdeep Singh Hundal told dna that a case under Section 376-C (Rape by a public servant after taking advantage of his official position) and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, had been registered against Salwinder late on Wednesday night at the City Police station.

"An FIR was registered and action is being taken as per law.We are yet to make contact with him (Salwinder Singh) but have dispatched teams to locate the accused," Jagdeep Singh Hundal told dna over the phone.

According to police, the complainant has alleged that Salwinder Singh was probing a criminal case registered against him following which the SP used to visit his house regularly. The complainant has further claimed that on one such visit Salwinder allegedly asked for a bribe of rupees 50,000. Salwinder is further accused of allegedly forcing the complainant's wife  to develop physical relationship with him.

"The case has been registered only after a preliminary inquiry into the allegations levelled against him by the complainant," added Hundal. An internal Punjab Police inquiry is also being conducted against the SP after five women constables accused him of sexual harassment.

Salwinder Singh was last in news in January during the Pathankot terror strike led by Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). The controversial SP had claimed that he was visiting a shrine near Bamiyal when a group of gunmen dressed in fatigues held him, his associate and driver as hostage. The same group used Salwinder's car to travel from the border to Pahankot Air force Station and launched an 80-hour gun fight in which seven security personnel were killed.
