Wary of the growing unrest in Kashmir valley over killing of civilians, the Centre has decided to immediately augment the security grid by sending additional central armed police forces (CAPFs).

Directing state government to ensure no more loss of lives in protests, the union home ministry is sending 3,600 additional CAPF personnel to the Valley. Of these 12 companies (1200 personnel) were sent on Saturday itself while 24 companies (2400 personnel) will reach on Sunday.

The decision was arrived at a meeting held by Union finance Secretary Ratan P Watal, who is holding the additional charge of Union home secretary, to review the Kashmir situation in the light of latest developments. The meeting was attended by top officials from Intelligence Bureau (IB), Army, central reserve police force (CRPF) and border security force (BSF).

Kashmir is on the boil since April 12 when protests broke out over alleged molestation of a local Kashmiri girl by army personnel. Though army unequivocally denied the incident and a video of the girl stating otherwise also surfaced on the social media, there has been no let off in the protests. The death toll of civilians in latest bout of violence reached five with the death of class 11student in the firing on Friday.

The meeting also reviewed the implementation of central development package announced by Prime Minister Modi during his visit to Kashmir in November last year. The Centre is hopeful that expeditiously implementation of the package will generate employment for the local youth thus putting them away from the warring path.

Officials said the union home minister Rajnath Singh and ministry officials are in regular touch J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and senior officials of J&K government and the situation is being monitored on round the clock basis to defuse the crisis.

Making efforts to quell the protests that are threatening to impact tourist season, Mehbooba on Saturday flew to Kupwara district and chaired a high-level meeting to make an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.

She also met with the victims' families in Handwara town to offer her condolences and held an interaction with the prominent members of the civil society to defuse tense situation.
