Biometric cards would be issued to fishermen as identity proof, stated Ashok Kumar Angurana, Secretary of Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. By June this year, nearly 20 lakh fishermen – out of the 1.5 crore fishermen - in the country will be issued biometric cards.

Angurana was speaking at a national workshop on how space technology could be used in fisheries. Angurana stated that around 13.20 lakh fishermen have already received their cards.

A report in Deccan Herald states that the Secretary said that the biometric cards were important for benefits of the Central and State government schemes to reach the stakeholders. Angurana stated that the issuing of biometric cards and the registration of fishermen are both being implemented to provide security along the vast coastline of the country as well as to protect the people fishing near international waters. The cards will serve as valid identity proofs for the fishermen.

According to the report, the Secretary stated that cards will be issued by a group of three Central public sector companies - Bharat Electronics (BEL), Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) and Indian Telephone Industries Limited (ITI). These cards will serve to increase security in the country. But they will also help fishermen in many ways. Data would be shared on potential fishing areas in the sea and weather forecast.

Angurana said it was the onus was on the state government and union territories to mobilise the fishermen and ensure that all of them get the biometric cards. He also stated that the state governments strengthen the 166 monitoring control and surveillance stations across India.
