The suspense and the long-drawn-out battle between father and son was finally over as the Election Commission gave the cycle symbol to UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, leaving Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav an angry and bitter man. The SP supremo vented his frustration by censuring his son and stating that he would even contest against him in the upcoming state polls.

Earlier in the day, Mulayam had reached the party office by noon to meet his supporters. But as he started meeting his men and received verbal support from them, Mulayam’s bitterness against his son came to the fore as he accused Akhilesh of deteriorating the prospects of the party. “Akhilesh is acting at the behest of Ram Gopal. If he does not listen, I will fight against him,” he said, adding that Ram Gopal has been giving instructions to Akhilesh from Delhi over phone.

The EC even termed the announcement of candidates by Mulayam as a violation of the party’s constitution. Seemingly resigned to a split in the party, Mulayam candidly admitted that he was now “helpless” to prevent it. The SP supremo also accused his son of giving fewer tickets to Muslims, who he said formed the backbone of the party’s electoral combination.

“I have always advocated the interest of Muslims. When I ensured the appointment of a Muslim as state’s Director General of Police, Akhilesh did not talk to me for 15 days. He did not want any Muslim on this post. It sent out an anti-Muslim message,” he alleged.  The SP founder further alleged that Akhilesh had a “negative approach” towards Muslims. “Akhilesh is playing into the hands of Ram Gopal Yadav, who is working on directions of the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

Sources confirm that Mulayam had called Akhilesh two-three times on Monday morning as the former wanted to give reconciliation one more chance. However, on getting no response from his son, Mulayam admitted that there was no possibility of any reconciliation now. And though party men had warned the SP leader of the presence of mediapersons at the gathering and shooed mediapersons out, sound clips that made the rounds on WhatsApp, revealed just what the SP leader was feeling.
